USB Printer not found


im running Slackware 8.1 and am having trouble getting my printer to work. ive got a hp deskjet 5550 connected to a usb port. i downloaded and installed the hpijs driver for the printer from hpinkjet.sourceforge.net. the kde control panel does not even detect any usb devices. please help. thanks!

see if you can find anything here....it has a perfect working status according to this page...

that a perfect working status is the best outta the four ratings, so i would think that you shouldn't have a problem getting this printer to work, just check over this page.

yeah, ive already studied those pages, along with many others. but nothing happens when i try to print something. it's like my computer doesn't know my printer is there.

did you try using different services, like cups or lpd or lprng or something and see if you get different results.

Thanks for your quick replys to my posts. I installed CUPS, but still nothing. I followed the instructions for installing my printer on /dev/usb/lp0, and it said device not found.

USB Printer not found

Sounds like you don't even have USB installed. Which appears to be my problem at the moment for my HP DeskJet 3320. I keep on running into problems with the USB modules.

Unfortunately the only details about people correcting the problem is if they do a clean install. Or unload, then reload the modules after a device is added. Not something I want to do, since I just did a net install on a dial-up connection.

well i know i have usb modules installed and i know they are loaded and i can't get my printer working either...i feel his pain ..
it doesn't detect it at all whether i look at /dev/lp0 or /dev/usb/lp0..

Ive actually already reinstalled, because i wanted to repartition my linux space, but im still having the same problem...

try

#modprobe printer

http://localhost:631

add your printer at usb port 1

and try a test page.. it did work for me!!! (finally)
