My System:
Mainboard: ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe
Processor: Athlon XP K7 3200+
Memory: 3 GB GSKILL DDR-Memory
Graphics: Geforce 7800GS+ TV Dual DVI AGP 512 MB
Powersupply: Corsair HX 850 W

My problem is, that all USB-Ports shut down without any action from me. After a certain time USB is no longer working at all. Sometimes it works for 80 hours and more without any failures, and another time it only runs for approx. 4 hours. I even had it working for 1 hour only.

This problem occurs both on Win XP SP3 as well on opensuse 11.2. For this reason I reckoned, this must be a hardware-matter. To get rid of this behaviour I deactivated in the BIOS the USB-controller. I installed a pci-card, which provides 4 external and 1 internal usb instead. The card was recognized by both Windows and linux.

The problem however remained. Does anyone have a solution for my problem? It is quite annoying worrying about such a problem and not having any idea how to solve it...

Different OS = same problem.
Different USB adapter = same problem.

Before that, did you add anything to your box ?
Did you change anything ? Drive ? Graphic card ?

This is what I would do: Find an ASUS voltage monitor and verify the 5 volts level.

Either the voltage controller on your board is going away; if you physically look at your board, you might have a few capacitors that are going. Motherboard makers, they don't want our boards to last for an eternity. Std run of the mill electronics (class 1) are design to usually last 7 years. Your Asus is what... 2003 ?

Check these pics, they show you caps that are gone. Just a bit and the value goes askew and the timming on the board is shot... if this is it, your whole board is about to depart because my best guess it the voltage on the PCI buss, ~5 volt, is out of range.

Let me start from the beginning:
recently I got some shutdowns, I had no explanation for them. I supposed it was a faulty powersupply. The old one was a COBA switching power supply, model AP-400X(P/PFC). Therefore I bought me a new one, which I hoped of, having power enough for my purposes.This is a Corsair HX850W. The 12V output supplies 70 (!) A - I think I never need that much current...

By chance I ran into an advertisement, where someone sold a used - but almost brandnew - AGP-Video-card like described right in the beginning of this thread. The performance exeeded my expectation - it was just overwhelming. The current-consumption ist that high, that I would have had no chance, to get it running with the former powersupply.

These (and the pci-usb-card) are the only changes I made to my computer. So far it doesn't look like this could have been responsible for my problems. I checked the pictures and looked for similar appearance on my motherboard. I took out all the cards and checked the slots where they were plugged in. But neither the cards nor the slots had any weird appearance. Then I checked the capcitors like you advised me to do. Everything on the motherboard looked like new - like freshly out-of-the-box.

When restarting the computer I checked in the BIOS some values:
MB temperature: 25°C
CPU temperature: 43°C
VCORE Voltage: 1,66V
+3,3V Voltage: 3,13V
+5V Voltage: 4,94V
+12V Voltage: 11,96V
CPU Fan speed: 2636 RPM

I tried to install ASUS Probe, but I was not able to do so (several drivers respectively dll where missing). I hope you can figure out what could have gone wrong.

I finally was successful installing ASUS Probe. Here are the latest values with Win XP running:
MB Temperature: 29°C
CPU Temperature: 54°C
VCORE Voltage: 1,64V
+3,3V: 3,13V
+5V: 4,91V
+12V:
12,03V
CPU Fan-Speed: 4066 RPM

Took a day to think...
The only thing I can muster is : " - almost brand new - AGP-Video-card "

It could be a zillion things... one is called Zapping an electronic circuit with static electricity. If the jolt is big, the board is fried and you would not have any graphics. If it's just zapped by static, it will function but erratic things might happens; from instant shut down through freezing to BSODs.

Do you strap yourself to a ground when you manipulate your electronic boards ?

I don't know man... it's pooped up!
I would be surprised if it's your new power supply.

If you go lspci on a console, you'll get the PCI works of your PC:

Try the AGP in another PC, do you lose USB with your old AGP ?
