USB mouse cauing kernel to lock up.

kernel gentoo-2.6.9-r14 an an amd64 (usb version 2)all usb and HID drivers compiled into kernel.

If i wait for linux to fully boot, then plug in my mouse, ll works perfectly, the mouse is detected as a creatve HID compatable mouse.

however if i leave the mouse plugged in, and boot dmesg does not show any detected mice, and any attempt to access usb causes the kernel to lock up to verying degrees, some times, so deep that console cursors stop blinking.

any idea's whats causing this ?

do you think re-compiling the kernel with HID and usb drivers as modules will help ?
