I'm trying to get my usb printer working in linux Slackware 8.1
I have configured the kernel with the proper modules and set up the printer with apsfilter and the test page works fine. I can also echo "test" > /dev/usb/lp0 although i have to chmod it to be writable by my normal no root login. The problem is when i try and printing in a program such a gimp or galeon etc... it appears to be printing but the printer doesn't do anything. I'm sure there is just something i forgot to setup or some permissions are screw up like /dev/usb/lp0 was.
Hegemon, how exactly did you set that up? Or can you at least point me to a page that will give me a how-to? Thanks! I got a 932C that I am trying to configure on Slack8.1 too.

Cool
Hi!
By far the easiest way to setup a printer is with CUPS. It works INCREDIBLY well.
Then after you've installed it, just point your favourite browser to localhost:631 , and set it up through the web interface.
You'dd probably need to rebuild your kernel to get support for USB printers though.
Its also possible that you'd have to get gimp-print if your printer is not supported by the Default CUPS install.
Good Luck!

PS, I use the ESP Ghostscript package because the one that comes by default with slackware does not have all the required support built in. For example, it would tell you that it can't convert file to a printable format. So just use pkgtool to remove ghostscript before you install the ESP ghostscript package.
I have the HP930c....and by FAR the best method is to throw away your USB cord, and plug that ALWAYS USEFUL parallel cable to the printer and to your computer, , it works better anyway.
