forgive me for being a newbie :-)
has anyone else tried to install an alctel dsl usb modem onto a red hat linux 7.1 yet?
i have the drivers and such, but i guess im failing in the install part. http://linuxdoc.org/howto/dsl-howto/speedtouchusb.html
this is where i found a good instuction page..but it makes the assumption that the reader knows all about linux. :-(
please help, i cant get rid of windows till this works, and i cant get a nic modem, only the usb....i would like to stay with dsl, but if i cant red hat linux to work with it, i may have to get a cable modem <sic>
Okay, what is it you have a problem with? I don't know anything about the thing you are talking about, but if you said what the problem is someone may help. One thing to make sure is that you USB support in the kernel.
1. I do not know how to install.
2. http://linuxdoc.org/howto/dsl-howto/speedtouchusb.html has an instruction step by step. it gives a warning that this install is not for the faint of heart, but im unable to to get a network dsl, im only able to get an usb, so ive been trying to learn as much as posible by reading the docs. but it always helps to have someone much smarter to help out :-)
3. in the instructions under 9.3.1 it says to configure the kernel, and to load your favorite kernel configuration method. i have know idea what this is......lol
at the end of this section, it says to compile and install the kernel and modules as you would normally. ?????
im running red hat 7.1 it has usb support. when booting up, it says somthing like adsl <ok> so i think im getting closer....but then again... lol lol :-)
Well, from reading the How-to it appears you will need to re-compile the kernel to use the driver which you have downloaded. Can you get hold of a copy of the latest kernel? If yes, you will need to read the kernel How-to at http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html
BUT, before you re-compile a kernel, you will need to install the driver from alcatel.
If you search the site I think there are few other posts which can help you. I would if I was you e-mail the people who have succeded, as they will be able to help you better than a dial-up guy like me!
PS - If your looking for someone smart you've come to the right place, just the wrong person in this case.
i have reviewed other post, but there all about PPoE nic installs, im stuck with this! lol lol i need the PPoA .
anyway.. i did this post to see if anyone has done this alctel install, but so far no bite :-(
also, can you answer me this? i have the red hat 7.1 it has a nice gui (gnome). when im instucted to type in commands, ie; $ make install .........where is the prompt?
i do follow the instuctions from the manuals..but like the kernel, it (man) says to type /usr/src/linux. i have no such directory. (is directory a valid linux word? lol)
i like the disk managment of linux better than good ole dos...ill get used to yet one of these days. :-)
"PS - If your looking for someone smart you've come to the right place, just the wrong person in this case."
oh im sure your smart.. :-)
oh, and another question i cant seem to extract an answer from those d**n manuals..but ill start a new thread :-)
