USB Devices in RedHat 7.3

Have some questions about my USB devices. Are they hotswappable like they are in Windows? If so I am having problems...

If I boot up without my USB mouse plugged in to my laptop then X will not start. Also when the USB mouse is installed my mouse pad does not work.

Lastly I frequently switch between USB mouse and other USB devices. Is there a way to configure my USB port like this?

Thanks,
Kenny

kenny, sorry to hear so many "USB" come out of your keyboard. USB is a head egg...and the most recommendable thing to do is not to use anything USB, I mean why even use USB?, you get your serial or ps/2 mouse and you got no problems, you get your ethernet card for your laptop and no problem, get your scsi scanner, parallel port printer, pci modem, and you'll live happy ever after...USB is a curse...sorry, I hope someone can help ya...

zLinuxz,

Sorry you feel that way. You are really missing out on some really convenient usage of devices that way. I have never had a problem with USB in 2k and XP and am hoping that I will have the same experience with Linux. If you use a desk top the need for USB may not be that big of an issue. But on a laptop it’s essential. Also it’s essential for Digital camera operation which is pretty important to me.

Aussie,

thanks for the link, I will check it out.

convenient, uh. I guess yeah, if you're sorta lazy and just wanna plug and so to speak "go", then for you it's probably convenient. But usb is slower compared with ethernet, and in keyboard and in mouse it just doesn't make a difference so it's a waste to buy usb since it'll be a pain. I too have a laptop, I don't have a single USB thing conected to it and it's got cd-rw, DVD, floppy, scanner connected to it, scsi, ethernet is already embedded as is the phone modem, ps/2 mouse and serial keyboard work beautifully on it, I even connect my removable zipdrive to it via scsi just like the scanner which is way faster than usb as well. So, where is the "essential" part of usb in regard to a laptop?, ehmm, there is none. So, should I feel sorry that I feel this way about usb?, hellll-no.,
