usb automount: how does it work?

Alot of distributions nowadays have the usb automount feature, ie, once a usb storage device is plugged in, it is automatically mounted on a predetermined mountpoint.

Just want to know how it works in general (how to turn it off, change its settings etc).
Reckon it's something to do with udev and its scripts?

Anyone can help me on this?

Btw, I'm using Zenwalk 2.8 (and i'm a linux newb)

Thx!!

You're right, udev is part of it.

Are you talking about icons appearing within the GUI? Because that is handled by HAL and DBUS.

If you're talking about the device auto-mounting itself on a pre-determined mount point from the console, then there is a package called usbmount (or usb-mount) which uses a udev rules file and a couple of scripts to do this.
