USB devices work in Linux fairly well, as a matter of fact i have a USB mouse, Zip250 drive, webCam and digital camera all working in Linux through USB. You either need to modprobe the correct modules if you have them. Ex:
modprobe usbcore
modprobe usb-uhci
Or if you dont have the modules you need to recompile the kernel adding USB support. How to do this is explained in the Kenrnel HOWTO

yeah, yeah, I know, it's just sort of a habit in me to pin it down, sorry!
maybe that's why it's getting a lot better then!, they got tired of me being able to say that USB sucked, hehehehe. and I guess partialy also because it was developed for Windows...with Microsoft's sponsorship as well.
