urgent: filesystem is read only

i am having some really weird problems with my Mandrake 10.0 system.
here's the symptoms:

i login via ssh since i don't have physical access to the system at the moment.
i can't seem to be able to execute commands like rm/cp/mv... the error that
i get complains that the file system is 'read only'!
same happens when i switch from my personal user account to root!

somebody suggested i remount the filesystem (as root) with:
mount -o remount,rw <partition with /home and />

when i do this i get the following message:
mount: block device /dev/hda6 is write-protected, mounting read-only

i also see plenty of these messages when i type 'dmesg':
EXT3-fs error (device hda6) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted

now, all of this was a day ago. today i am still having the same problems
*plus* the whole system is slowing down noticeably. i takes a few minutes
to do a simple 'ls'.

please help!

i should add that i've been running the apache webserver on this
machine for a long time now. could the problem be related to this?
what are the error logs i should check?
