urgent:compiling problem sched.o error

I downloaded linux version 2.4.22 and patched using version 5 of patch

When I compiled it using the the standard steps
1. make menuconfig
2. make dep
3. make

This was the error in the 3rd step of compilation of linux v2.4.22
(In step menuconfig, I selected options of ext3 fS, under File systems)

make[2]: *** [sched.o] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/local/vsu/linux-2.4.22/kernel'
make[1]: *** [first_rule] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/local/vsu/linux-2.4.22/kernel'
make: *** [_dir_kernel] Error 2

If anybody has faced this problem before, kindly tell me how you solved it
