Question uptime/users

I was exploring my system, still learning what Linux is all about. And I foudn the commands uptime and users.

They both tell me there are 5 users currently logged in. 3 of them is my user, and 2 are root? All I have running on my desktop is Licq and AMSN.

I could check my processes, but will that fill me in on why I have all these users logged in?

Thank

Erik

Running the command 'ps aux' will diplay all of your processes and plenty of details about them. It will let you know "where" people are logged in if it can.
You can also run 'finger' or 'who' without any username after it to display who is logged on and where.

You probably have a lot of background processes that run as your user and your root user. 'Who' processes run as seems to be different from one distibution to the next.

Do you have any terminals open, are you logged in in another virtual consoles??? To add to irish_rover's reply command w will give you the user name and what this user is doing at this exact moment.

Yeah, actually, I have a similar question. it's not about processes. I know why those are running (for the most part), but it specifically says that there are 7 users, and they're all me. They are always there (as far as i know), even right after boot. So it appears that I'm logged in 6 or 7 times, but I dont know why.
