Upgrading via rpm

Greetings

Is upgrading via the command

rpm -Uvh <package name>

The proper way to keep your system up to date. I have upgraded iptales with the new errata on Aug 25 from Redhat and although iptables seems to be working the same I am unsure if this is the proper way to keep your system current. I have also upgraded the kernel this way.

BTW my Linux box is only firewall/router with no services running. (text mode only)

Yes.

However, if you would like a more automated updater, check out apt4rpm. Its great for the command line.

It seems as if the boot message is different now that I've upgraded the iptables package, Although everything still works. Just wanted to be sure I didn't need to do anything else

I find a great way to stay current with updates. Its a program called yum ( http://linux.duke.edu/projects/yum )

It's very easy to intall and easy to stay currend
yum check-update
tells you if there is something you need to update.
