Hello all. I’m running Redhat Enterprise Linux version 3.0 with an active RHN subscription. I want to upgrade to version 5.0. I’m a bit anxious though. I only have a few users, but have spent a lot of time getting everything running well. My question: If I install Red Hat Enterprise V5 using the upgrade option, will I loose any of my data or applications?
Here is what I’m specifically concerned about loosing:
Apache, MySql, PHP, Qmail, Vpopmail, and various other small applications (Webalizer, etc…). All of the above have been compiled from source. I’m also concerned about stuff in /usr /usr/home /etc and /var
The Red Hat manual section on upgrading speaks to the preservation of RPMs and packages and fails to address the above mentioned.
Thanks in advance for any info you may have. --Jesse

I know this is the first of two duplicate postings, so I will just say please to do this in the future, it is in poor taste.
I answered your 'later' posting in the RedHat forum.
This is a forum that deals with a large number of users from all over the world, not a personal help site. Have a little patience your query will be answered in time, maybe not in the 2.5 hours between your duplicate postings. Some of use are sleeping, give us time to wake up. Some of use have better things to do then waiting to answer postings (jobs, getting the kids off to school, taking a shower and hundreds/thousands of other activities). Almost all (99.99% of registered users) volunteer time and knowledge when/where possible.
Please pardon me for the double posting. I didn’t see the Red Hat forum until after I had posted my original message. I did not duplicate the message in the Red Hat forum so it would be answered quicker. I just thought it was a more appropriate place.
I am so embarrassed by your response. How patronizing and inappropriate. What’s that bit about your job and kids anyway? I’m a nurse and work in a busy inner city emergency department 60 hours a week. I have kids as well. So what? What does that have to do with my behavior on this forum? Also…. What’s the commentary about the site not being a “personal help site.” …and, “have a little patience?” I thought my question was fitting, and it’s tone was polite. I rarely post questions in online forums such as this one. I certainly won’t post here again.
PS. This response WAS posted in both the Linux - General and Red Hat forums.

I do apologize for any misunderstanding. I offered you an explanation as to why double posting is inappropriate. It was not meant to be patronizing or embarrassing in any way. Just a little reminder that like you everybody has a life and job to deal with.
You did double post the same query within a short period of time, Yes, I realize that this was a (very small) mistake. This was not a case of being impatient and I do again offer my apology for assuming so, this was/is my mistake.
