Upgrading advice needed

When installing from src . I have a current setup of apache 1.3.26 PHP 4.2.1 & openssl 0.9.6.d. This has been configured made & installed. Than httpd.conf file needs to be edited & is now all setup & hase been for about a 2 month period. Now we have newer versions of Openssl & PHP.

What is the best/easiest way to reinstall when new versions of a program. be it a new version of Apache or programs that need to be configured within Apache.

I don't want to keep continually having to go into the conf files to update then every time a new vesion of something comes out..

Well in my case I've got couple of scripts doing just that purpose. For instance I use checkinstall for the last step of the make install proccess and that's the easy way to remove the files added to your system.

So basically just create a backup of the conf files, install the new package ... copy back org conf files and go for it

I've never had a problem with an Apache compile overwriting my existing conf files. Of course, I do make a complete backup of Apache and the related modules before I start a new install just in case.
