Upgraded Kernel now i can't login

I had installed Fedora Core 5,then i upgraded the kernel from 2.6.15 to the 2.6.17.1 kernel i got from kernel.org . everything went smoothly and the system boots fine into the new kernel, but once i get to the login screen,i cant login as root anymore.it says my password is incorrect.I even tried booting back into the old kernel(2.6.15) and it still says my root password is incorrect. any ideas? i didnt change the pass, and im %100 sure that thats the real pass since ive been logging into it all day yesterday and today.
