Remember in most cases you will have to already be using the 2.4.19 kernel and if your using Slack 8.1 it comes with 2.4.18, so in order for you to apply the 2.4.20 patch, you will have to also apply the 2.4.19 patch before it.
Just a heads up in applying patches and not just downloading the whole kernel and compiling that way.

I got it from here ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4..so just wondering if i should of patched -thanks

If you already downloaded and compiled the 2.4.20 kernel, you have no use to patch it with the 2.4.20 patch.. you've already got the latest and greatest.

patches like 2.4.19 2.4.20 patches 2.4.18->2.4.19 2.4.19->2.4.20 respectively.. if u have 2.4.20 yesterday, it's same 2.4.20 that they have on the site.. imo
there other patches like 2.4.20-ac2 which u want to patch over 2.4.20 to get some more functionality.
other than that u wouldn't need to patch it.
