updated kernel with up2date and now gnome is gone

I updated my kernel with up2date and now gnome has completely vansished, when I startup the system only shows x-windows. I tried switchdesktop and it still only shows xterm, and system default. Finally I tried reinstalling gnome but it says that it is already installed. SO I have no idea what to do from here. I also tried to reboot using the old kernel but it did the same thing.

What version of gnome, kernel, and what distro is this on?

What other packages did it install? And do you see any type of errors in your log files?

And in the future, don't update your kernel using up2date, everything else usually don't give problems from what I've experienced using it.. ;)

-kernel version is 2.6.9-1.681_FC3 it is fedora core 3
I think gnome 2.6

I am not sure what other packages it installed there were 6 I think
um 2 were samba packages

and and 2 were cups packages

Do you have any other Window Managers installed and if so, do they work? If gnome is your default window manager, doing a startx, does it spit back any errors on the console when it fails?

ampersand 12-20-2004 08:31 PM

well I am in x windows and it seems to be working fine. but no I do not have any other windows managers
When I said that gnome is gone I may have been over stating the case, however for whatever reason it is not showing up in the session dialog at fedoras login screen.

I can not seem to reset it to the default it just always reboots to x-windows

ampersand 12-20-2004 08:45 PM

also when I am in x-windows and doing the startx command spits back that x-windows is already running

OK so I think I have figured out the problem or at least narrowed it down, it seems that gnome is just no longer set to be my default windows manager. So no the question is. HOw to I set gnome to be my default windows manager?
