unresolved symbols after kernel compile

i followed the sticky in the slackware forum when compiling a custom kernel on my slackware 9.1 laptop. however, the alsa modules will not load, and there are tons of unresolved symbols produced by depmod. can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong?

how have you compiled alsa? as modules? are the modules loaded? what symbols are they?

discombobulated......

thanks for the quick reply. sorry, i wrote that first post in a hurry. when i configured my kernel, i said no to everything i didn't think i needed, and yes to most of what i did need. i chose very, very few options to be compiled as a module. basically, im so confused now, i don't know where to begin. the alsa modules appear to be loaded (as indicated by lsmod), and alsaconf says it detects my soundcard, but applications say otherwise. after starting gnome, dmesg just says a few hundred lines of "Intel ICH soundcard not found or device busy".

here is what is displayed when i run 'depmod'. the thing is, it seems as though most of these are modules i said "no" to when i configurred my kernel.

sorry if this seems like i'm asking two questions at the same time. there aren't any of these problems with my old kernel. i hope this makes sense, because it doesn't to me.......

[edit]
here is some lines from /var/log/messages that appeared to me to be problematic:
jan 29 11:55:13 ba10 kernel: usb.c: registered new driver usbdevfs
Jan 29 11:55:13 ba10 kernel: usb.c: deregistering driver usbdevfs
Jan 29 11:55:13 ba10 kernel: usb.c: registered new driver hub
Jan 29 11:55:13 ba10 kernel: uhci.c: USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver v1.1
Jan 29 11:55:13 ba10 kernel: usb.c: deregistering driver usbdevfs
Jan 29 11:55:13 ba10 kernel: uhci.c: USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver v1.1
Jan 29 11:55:13 ba10 last message repeated 26 times
......
......
then this message is repeated dozens of times
Jan 29 12:00:55 ba10 insmod: Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.4.22/modules.dep
Jan 29 12:00:55 ba10 modprobe: Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.4.22/modules.dep

im not sure if this pertains to my problems or not, but it looked interesting...
