unresolved symbols

to prove i don't know everything (anything??)...

hmm, ok trying to get the new nvidia drivers going i've gone a bit wonky. when making them, i get...

depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18-4mdk/kernel/drivers/video/NVdriver
/lib/modules/2.4.18-4mdk/kernel/drivers/video/NVdriver: unresolved symbol create_proc_entry_R65242b4c
/lib/modules/2.4.18-4mdk/kernel/drivers/video/NVdriver: unresolved symbol proc_root_R73c1ad80
/lib/modules/2.4.18-4mdk/kernel/drivers/video/NVdriver: unresolved symbol init_mm_R83f38176
/lib/modules/2.4.18-4mdk/kernel/drivers/video/NVdriver: unresolved symbol devfs_register_Red0cbfe7

and about 10 more. I've not got a clue what to do really. I'm getting this error now even installing and old NV driver, on an old kernel, which was working perfectly prior to me installing a new kernel rpm, and configuring the source tar.gz with that kernels config file. These unresolved functions are listed (well, the readable parts) in the system.map files, but i don't really nkow if that has any relevance!

help!!!

ahhhh ignora de boy, he a no know what he a say... mama mia!

waasn't good enough to just make dep then source with a rpm config, but miraculously the source rpm appeared anyway about 20 minutes ago... odd.

i thought i'd got the hang of compiling a kernel well enough, but it wasn't till i went back to an rpm kernel and suddenly a number of things worked better, or faster.... ahh well, i'm nearly there...

I'm having the same problem, but haven't been able solve it yet...

Funny thing is, I had the driver working before... same kernel, same card, same driver... different machine. Yes, I do have the source rpm installed.

Well, it says it was successful, but it really wasn't...

I"m having similar issues with my sound card:

I tired "depmod -ae" and nothing was returned.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

The last time I compiled nVidia drivers in RH7.2, I had to use the vanilla src package. Anything else gave me the unresolved symbols problems too. For as much of a pain in the butt as it is I'm running the 2413 release until I hear the newer one is better / faster / whatever.

My geForce2MX is ripping along quite nicely as it is

Quothe Mr. Kewpie "Ignora da boy!"

Psycho's message sent me back to NVidia's site to get the src package. There, I realized they have a version for Athlon processors. I just migrated to a new machine, and I was using the rpm I had downloaded before. Whoops!

Thanks guys!

Now, if I could only get my sound to work...

For a 2.4.x series kernel you shoule be using modprobe to take advantage of the kernel autoloader, insmod is like ipchains, it's a 2.2.x thang.

But, I _AM_ using modprobe...

It looks like it then calls insmod somewhere down the road...

#/sbin/modprobe snd-card-via8233
... unresolved symbols...
/lib/modules/2.4.7-10/misc/snd-mixer.o: unresolved symbol snd_control_register_ioctl_Rd848add9
... more unresolved symbols...
/lib/modules/2.4.7-10/misc/snd-mixer.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.7-10/misc/snd-mixer.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.7-10/misc/snd-mixer.o: insmod snd-card-via8233 failed

You might need to upgrade your kernel, by rpm of compiling it yourself.
