Unnamed pipe no longer works?

Hi all,
I'm seeing a weird error on one of our servers, running RHEL 5. Namely, the | unnamed pipe command no longer works for non-root accounts in our Bash shell. No error or other message is returned, it just doesn't work.

[user@hostname ~]$ cat .bash_history | grep ps
[user@hostname ~]$ grep ps .bash_history
ps -ef
grep ps .bash_history
.
.
.

Same thing when piped to more, less, etc.

It does work for root, so I first thought it was a permissions issue, but it also works for all users in ksh. I diff'd /etc/bashrc with another machines and it looks fine, as does it's permissions. From googling, it sounds like this pipe is not represented anywhere on the filesystem where perms might apply, and since it works in ksh, it seems more like a bash issue. Anyone seen this before?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Why are you even bothering looking at the .bash_history by using cat, more or less anyways. Does the command history work?

Try something like this instead:

[user@hostname ~]$ history | grep ps
