I'm currently trying to install samba, and after decompressing it the documents describe how to create the rpm installer for it. when I type in

sh makerpms.sh

it returns the error

Unknown RPM version: Version 4.0

I have looked for any kind of an explination on what exactly the problem is, and tried figuring it out with several books, but I'm still lost. Can anyone tell me what the problem is? Thanks

Red Hat upgraded RPM to version 4. Unfortunately it is not fully compatible with version 3, which is what you probably have installed. You may want to upgrade to version 4. The latest version of 3 is somewhat compatible with 4, so you may want to try that first.

Unknown RPM version: RPM version 4.0

I just installed RedHat 7.0 on my computer and now I am installing Samba 2.0.7 for the first time.

I am getting the same error discussed in this thread: Unknown RPM version: RPM version 4.0.

I have RPM version 4.0. What does this error mean? I am a linux newbie, so please be specific.

Thanks in advance!

Ditto.

Same problem here RH 7, same error, what do I do to get around it?

Please be as specific as possible because I also am new to this OS.
