"Unknown interupt or fault at EIP .."

I am running Debian Etch on a Sony Vaio VGNFE21M - T2300/15.4"WXGA/1204MB/160gb1 Bluet.

I was trying to install Beryl using this method :

After rebooting I got this error :

Unknown interupt or fault at EIP 00010046 00000060 c01bc24f

The interrupt happens during the boot process.

Lilo 22.6.1 begins to load Linux

Then I see "BIOS data check successful"

Then I see "Uncompressing Linux OK (says something else here but cant read it as the interrupt happens) "

Then the "Unknown interrupt or fault at EIP 00010046 00000060 c01bc24f" floods the screen from top to bottom.

The keyboard doesn't work just a flashing underscore ( _ ) under the u in Unknown on one of the lines.

I have been told from another forum that the problem might be related to a bug in the kernel : But the issue dosent seem to have been resolved.

"Unknown interrupt or fault at EIP "

I have booted into Lilo in interactive mode. It has given me the option of booting into Linux Old which I have done.

Now I receive another error which might be related to initial boot interrupt error.

Failed to start the X server ( your graphical interface)

X server output :

"Error: API mismatch : the NVIDIA kernel module is version 1.0.8776, but this X module is version 1.0.7184. Please be sure that your kernel module and all NVIDIA driver files have the same driver version.

Unkown interupt

Dont have a nice GUI just the command line which trying to get anything done with is fcuking torture.

So im trying to cp my files from the hd onto usb.

After several hours of piss balling about ive discverd how to mount the usb. but alas not how to copy. Do me a favour and post a reply cos 50 odd views without comment is not exactly what I call answering my questions.
