Unknown Host
I'm trying to go to the website www.gapbuster.com
Using Konqueror I get an 'unknown host' error. Using Firefox I get a 'could not be found' error. Using Windows 98SE, IE6 (dual booting on the same computer) I have no problem. Does anyone have any ideas? I've had cases before where a website could not be displayed, or wouldn't display correctly, but never a case when the site wasn't recognised as a valid address. Using SuSE 9.1 Personal with a 56k dial-up modem. |
Works for me using Firefox, perhaps your behind a proxy?? Or perhaps your resolv.conf file is not setup in Linux correctly.... etc.

You seem to have an unreliable DNS server. Sometimes the host name is resolved, but other times it's not.

But surely, the fact that I have no problem with Windows and I do with Linux suggests that it might be something to do with SuSE? I've never managed to get into gapbuster with SuSE, But I can always access it with IE. Could it have anything to do with SuSE's internal firewall (I used the default settings when I installed it)?

Did you even look at my suggestions? Did you check your resolv.conf file for the correct DNS settings? Try taking out any lines that start with search even and leave only the lines with "nameserver ip-address" in there to force it to use those DNS, etc. When you access it thru IE is this the same box or different? More details on setup get better replies. ;) |
I suppose that's the problem with doing my posting at work, rather than sitting in front of my computer at home.
Bearing in mind that I'm new at this sort of thing, I've managed to find resolv.conf although I'm not sure of it's purpose. The majority of it is info and there are just two lines with details of nameservers. |

And like mentioned before, more details on network setup helps us. Are you behind a proxy, etc? |
Well, as far as I can tell I'm not behind a proxy. Not quite sure what it is, though. I've just got an ordinary PC connected to the internet via a modem. According to my ISP the DNS is dynamically assigned. I've booted in Windows (where I could get into gapbuster) & checked the DNS using the facility on www.webyield.net/domainquery.html, then restarted in Suse (where I couldn't get into gapbuster) and checked the DNS again - same value in Windows & SuSE, but different to those shown in resolv.conf.

is your modem a winmodem? try linuxant.com for a linux driver.
