unknown error 990

Hi,

I've got a raidzone runing kernel 2.4.20-ws39smp which is a variation of redhat 9. Recently it crashed and something has happened to two directories but I'm not sure what. For at least one of the directories, it was being worked in when the machine went down. When I go to the directory that contains one of the problem directories and do a ls I get the error:

ls: <problem directory name>: Unknown error 990

And then the rest of the current directory I'm in is listed without a problem. Does anyone know what this error message means? Also, if I try to cd into one of the problem directories, I'm told the directory doesn't exist. Thanks so much.

Have you tried a fsck lately? might help, also what file system are you using?

I haven't tried fsck recently. I do have a question about it though, can I run fsck without hurting the machines performance too much? Only two folders out of thounds are currently affected and this machine shares (via NFS) data with about a dozen machines. So, can I run fsck while I keep the machine up and exporting?

As for the file system, I'm not sure what type I'm running, is there a way I can find out? As you can see my knowledge here is rather lacking, so any and all tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.
