Uninstalling windows xp before installing linux

Hi all, I am about to become a Linux user, but before I install I may need to get rid of windows xp (I updated xp and now they want me to buy another activation key - over my cold dead body!) since I've been locked out of xp. My question is, how can I install Linux from scratch? Should I? I hope you guys can help me and in simple words, because I'm not that much of a computer wiz.

If you're going to just erase the Xp install, just boot with the distro install disk and use the entire disk.
