I don't know if you can do this from within WinXP, but you can try and if it works, it should work (how's that for a non-commital comment?!)

From a DOS prompt: fdisk /fixmbr

You could easily do this after booting to a DOS floppy that contained the fdisk command, but without a floppy drive you might have some trouble with that step! You could make or find a bootable DOS CD that contains the fdisk command however. Use something with the newest version of DOS fdisk available (was that the Win98SE version? - I can't remember).

What kind of error do you get when Debian won't boot for you? May just be a simple thing that you can fix easily.

Retarded??
If you have a system restore disk, there should be a way to boot from that and get into the Windows installation. Once, there, type "fixmbr" and you are done.
If you bought a computer that does not come with at least this level of recovery capability, then contact the vendor for more help.

I am puzzled at the reports of people with computers that appear to have no way of re-installing Windows in the event of a meltdown. I would NEVER purchase such a setup.

Download a FeeDos iso image

Burn it into a CD

Boot up FreeDos, use its fdisk.exe and type

Code:
fdisk /mbr
You can also try Ultimate Boot CD as it got FreeDos inside too
