Question Unicode vs. Western Encoding

I've been looking into how to display and type international characters on this computer running Linux, and I keep seeing Unicode mentioned. I did some research on Unicode, and now I'm a little confused. It seems like UTF-8 is so wonderful and solves all encoding problems, so why does anyone still use ISO-8859-1 and why is it the default on so many programs? I guess I want to know... does Unicode have any disadvantages (major or minor), and what are they? Thanks!
