Unhappy with Redhat 9.0
 

Yo,

Just a quick observation.

After installing RH9 I think it sorta sux. It seems slower, the icons and programs are more burried in the menu's (like WinXP), and I don't notice that much at all from RH8.

Man....and I shelled out $40 for it. Hmm....

Anyone have any takes on SuSE 8.1 or 8.2?

Better than RH?

Seems to me that the last good release from Redhat was 7.3
I used 7.3 and liked it a lot.

Dear oh dear.

I know you paid for Redhat (I didn't!) but firstly, if you're not happy with it, there are a few things you can do. Try changing the window manager, checking that your hard drive is properly tuned for Linux and changing the nice priority of certain desktop items.

If you don't like it, you really can change it, and be a more informed person for it! Come on - you used to pay $400 for Windows whatever and you could only change the wallpaper and screensaver on that!!

I'm looking for something that will replace Windows XP (what my wife and I currently use).

I think I have most things working right, but I need to import all my email from OE6 and her email from Mozilla 1.3

I got my Iomega external USB drive working thanks to Tinkster :D

I have heard some real good things abour SuSE regarding multimedia and stuff. I am not worried that I paid for RH9, as I like to purchase a linux distro every year or so for support :)

Maybe I'll mess around with it a bit more... I can't believe that my 1.8GHz laptop would not run RH9 damn good... I'll have to do some tuning :)

As Q*Bert suggested ... try getting sussed
why the box is slow...

It runs a little "benchmark" on your hdd
performance ... would be nice to see
your output!

Also, check which demons/services RH
starts by default and you don't need...

can't you get rhat for free? I'm running RH8 ,
and after a few config's it's working fine.

Of Course you can get Redhat for Free. I just like to support the linux cause :D

I guess I should have downloaded and tried it first.....and then decided what to buy. :)

Oh well, I bought SuSE Linux 8.2 last night at Amazon. I figure spending $80 for 2 linux distro's is OK.

It's for a good cause :)

one little thing about ^ that; if your xp menus are cluttered, clean
them. don't blame windows for that; it is being attacked enough
as it is :D

I paid for RH 9. I like it. Add apt-get and it's pretty cool. The only complaint I have is that acpi is STILL NOT enabled in the default kernel. It uses apm which is not supported by my HP laptop. Oh well, I guess I have to learn to recompile the kernel after all. Hey can you do the compile of a kernel on one machine then transfer it to another when done?

What are you talking about Windows XP menu's for?

I'm talking about the default Redhat 8/9 menu's looking like a mixed up Windows XP menu.

I am not saying I'm mad about XP's menu :D They are cluttered by default. I shouldn't have to clean up menu's on a fresh load....and I don't have to with KDE 3.0

But with RH i would have to. Plus I hate the little Redhat fedora in the lower left hand corner. I want just the KDE gear.

For me, Redhat 9.0 runs -alot- better than 8.0 -- I think it is a vast improvement, both powerwise and aesthetically. And it runs quite well on my 1.2 GHZ laptop, so I'm not sure why your 1.8 is having so many problems.

And why would one want the default KDE look? Bluecurve is so much more crisp and pleasing.

I have to say I'm impressed with RH9. I once purchased SuSe 8.0, and I have to say I do prefer the KDE look to the Gnome with the fedora. But the speed, smoothness and stability of Redhat 9 seems to over-ride any views I once had of SuSe. Yes , SuSe is nice, but it just seems to be less rewarding that installing RH9.

Found out how to change my Redhat icon back to KDE.

I had to choose a different icon theme.

Try it :) I'm using conectiva icons now.

Whitehat, have you received your SuSE 8.2 yet?
If so, how do you like it?
