uname -p = unknown?

i know i have seen this as long as i have been using linux, and never stopped to think about it, ask, or look it up, why doesnt it show the host processor type? is there something i need to edit, or add to get it to stop showing unknown? ie
# uname -p
unknown
# uname -a
Linux weirdo 2.4.16 #1 SMP Thu Jan 10 04:07:06 EST 2002 i686 unknown

now that i have thought about it, it bugs me to see it that way..i know the processor type is set in the kernel when i compiled it, but it still doesnt read, and cat /proc/cpuinfo shows the right processor type
