Unable to start X Windows

Hi. I am somewhat new to linux and am trying to get my box set up. I installed Ubuntu Server and then installed kde via:

apt-get install kde

But when I try startx, I get the error:

X: cannot stat /etc/X11/X (No such file or directory), aborting.

I did:

apt-get upgrade xorg-x11

to mke sure that I had a new version of X, but the same error. I also would like to run xorgconfig in order to help setup an xorg.conf, but xorgconfig is not in my path.

I also have a more general question which is when a particular command (such as xorgconfig) is missing, how do I figure out which package I need to install in order to get that command.

I had the same experience installing Ubuntu Server and then X and KDE. Try Kubuntu Desktop first. You can always add anything that is in the server edition to the desktop edition.

apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

To do a search, use: apt-cache search_term
