Angry unable to set permission


I want to gv read write permission to user on a folder. folder belong to ROOT user

I execute follwing command but no success.

# chmod 777 /folder

plz help

I don't know what the "gv" command is.

Is this directory a mounted partition? If so what is the filesystem used. If it is ntfs or fat32 then you change the ownership and permissions using mount options. E.G. uid,gid,fmask,dmask.

When you said "to user", do you mean any user or a particular user?

I guess gv = give

Are you trying to set the permissions as root? I assume yes given the #

What is the exact error message

It Fat32 I am trying to give permission to particular user.

Plz tell me command how do I set permission to it

You do not give permissions to individual users....

The three permission fields are for Owner, Group, and Others. To give permission to one user, you would add them to the group for the file/directory. You could of course change the group to one that the user already belongs to.
