Unable to FTP install Suse 8.1 and don't know why!!

Tried my best to verify that the server I was loading from (mirror.mcs.anl.gov) had mirrored 8.1, and it appeared to have done so. Re-transferred and burned the boot.iso cd, then ran the starttup and pointed it to /pub/suse/i386/8.1 (also tried /current). Still got the same effect where it puills up the installation program, I choose my settings, it scans for packages, then displays the "No base selection available" and "ERROR:No proposal" messages under the "SOFTWARE" selection item. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Could someone that it worked for post their steps, and any ideas I might be able to follow? This is very frustrating!

i DID manage to do an ftp install of suse 8.1 but it took a bit of doing! after several unsuccessful attempts, i discovered that the installer requires the ip address of the download location rather than the host name - so 80.99.99.1 or whatever, rather than ftp.suse.com or whatever your nearest mirror site is.
i also found it was only possible to do this via a manual install, after the automatic one stalled while loading to YaST2 to the ramdisk.
finally, i used the current link rather than explicitly naming the distro's folder.
hope this is some help. cheers.

Yes... this problem is very strange...

I have gotten 9.0 to install once or twice via FTP. But now it wont. Ive gone through all the MD5SUMS and everything is ok but it wont work. The times Ive gotten it to work, the installation media was on an old version of suse (7.3) or a windows box running IIS.

This may be a problem with the default ftpd configuration on 8.2 and greater versions of SuSE
