Ubuntu/windows want to update both and keep current config
 

Hi All,

I've found three resources already in regards to installing Windows after Linux. However, I wonder if the following would work.

I'm currently running Ubuntu 8.04 and Windows 98. Can I upgrade to WinXP, then update to Ubuntu 9.04?

I know installing windows will reset the MBR. I hope that when I update Ubuntu that it will see there is already a version installed and ask if is to update instead of doing a clean install.

Does anyone have experience with this or can give suggestions.

I should add that I have burned the ISO of Ubuntu 9.04 and therefore would boot off of that to hopefully update my system.

The order you install them doesn't matter as much unless. If you are going to use a CD to re-install Kubuntu and not do the upgrade then I would do that last.
I think a Kubuntu upgrade is going to change your menu.lst file and not re-install grub (although I haven't tried it) and you will manually need to re-install grub to the boot sector after installing or upgrading to windows xp.

That's it. I want to first upgrade windows. I woudl lose grub in teh MBR. I would then follow up with the update to Ubuntu. I wonder though if the installer would recognize there is a version of Ubuntu to be updated and re-install grub in the MRB?

Then you can go ahead and install windows xp.

If you are going to just upgrade kubuntu then you will need to boot with the live cd (After installing windows), supergrub or one of many linux repair cd's available and re-install grub so you can boot back into Kubuntu.

If you are just going to wipe the Kubuntu partition and re-install the newer version of Kubuntu ( I Believe this is the recommended way ), it will set up grub automatically for you.

One word of warning though. I would back up any important files on both operating systems before moving ahead though. Always a chance something will go awry.

Not sure if Kubuntu will recognize the already installed version. I would recommend wiping and simply re-installing ( After backing up your important data first ), its much less troublesome and gives you a fresh system to work with.
