Ubuntu v9.10 Boot Problem

Very strange problem, I've searched forums for several hours and have not found this exact issue. Any help is much appreciated.

Setup:
* Ubuntu version 9.10
* Simple partitioning, single OS, single harddrive, just Ubuntu installed (sda1 = Linux, sda2 = extended, sda5 = swap)
* GRUB version 1.97beta4

The issue is:
1) In order for my system to boot properly, I have to go into the boot menu (f12), option 2 (boot from hard disk), then manually select the kernel to boot via the GRUB menu.
2) Once the system has booted, I can repeatedly restart the system without doing step1 and everything works fine. Once the system is shutdown, I have to do step1 again.

Not a huge problem, but annoying because if I am not there to do step1, the system will not boot (i.e. power outage).

Thanks for any help. Hopefully its obvious to someone.

Where did you install GRUB ?
In MBR sda
Or somewhere else ?
If it is installed on sda try the command sudo update grub

Thanks for the response. I tried both reinstalling and updating GRUB. The problem remains.

Can anyone tell me what is different in the system when you manually select the image to load (as opposed to the system loading the default image). Also, another clue is this only occurs when the computer has been powered off (no issue when restarting).

Problem solved. I don't understand why it fixed it but just in case anyone else experiences the same problem I'll post here.

I simply went into GRUB's menu.lst file and removed the 'quiet' and 'splash' options. My intention was just to see where in the boot process it was stalling out at. But to my suprise, I can boot from a powered off state, and it doesn't stall at all. Strange...
