Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04) - Dell D500, Intel 855 video. Hibernate scrambles display

The user of this laptop says his whole computer would freeze, requiring restart, after he closed his laptop while using Ubuntu 7.10.

Now, he's newly installed 8.04. His display is scrambled after hibernate. He can go to a tty, and restart X, without having to restart the OS.

We've researched the Internet, but the solutions are for 7.10, and don't work for him.

What are some things to try?
