Ubuntu and NTP

Hi

I am having an issue with NTP on my ubuntu machine.

when i run ntpdate or ntpdate-debian I keep on getting this error

root@ubuntu:~# ntpdate igubu.saix.net
27 Sep 08:08:05 ntpdate[20543]: no server suitable for synchronization found

the actual timeserver is fine because when I run it on my backtrack machine it works fine.

root@bt:~# ntpdate igubu.saix.net
27 Sep 08:12:02 ntpdate[27456]: step time server 196.25.1.1 offset 16.716159 sec

Does anyone know what I could try do to get ntp to work?

Thank you

use debugging to see what the data in the ntp payload actually is - ntpdate -dv igubu.saix.net and you'll see what is happening with the network traffic, and what strata's are being reported back.

Do you need to define some specific servers in ntp config? Also, I don't think this is the case here, but when your system clock gets too far out of sync, ntp won't work.

I wrote that originally, but then deleted it. I'm sure this only applies to ntpd, and it would be illogical for it to be relevant to ntpdate which is a single shot administrative command. You do want to to change the time, that's why you're using it that second with a specific ntp server listed.
