Ubuntu 10.04 not loading. Sticks at GRUB loading
 

Hello

Ubuntu 10.04 not loading. Sticks at GRUB Loading message.

Read the other threads re OS not loading and GRUB. The talk about code goes over my head.

Local techie says the hardware is good. Tried reloading Ubuntu from CD. Tried loading the unmentionable OS.

Tried using Spotmau Powersuite.

Any ideas?

The easiest way to get GRUB back on-line is with a live CD. It doesn't really matter which live CD, so long as it comes with a copy of GRUB. Place the live CD into the computer and boot from it. We're then going to venture into command-line territory. The next thing to do is run the "grub" command as root or, if you are running a live CD that uses sudo, run "sudo grub". This will start GRUB and provide us with a prompt.

Grub comes up on the screen automatically as

GRUB Loading

but nothing happens.

Using a CD makes no difference.

Have you installed Ubuntu to your hard drive?
If so, is this a new install or have you been able to boot it previously?
How many hard drives?
What operating systems if any besides Ubuntu?
How many partitions? What's on them?

Makes no difference to what? When you try to boot the CD? When you try to boot the installed(?) system with the CD?

Sometimes grub will let you edit the menu by pressing the letter 'e' and then the letter 'b' to boot the new changes. When you do this, the change is temporary until you boot into the system to fix the issue.

But if grub doesn't get that far, you will need to use a Live CD to get back into the system to fix the problem.

People use live CDs to reset passwords, mount partitions, backup data, edit configuration files and more.

A live CD or Live USB is a handy tool to have.

Makes no difference to what? When you try to boot the CD? When you try to boot the installed(?) system with the CD?

Ubuntu is installed on a single hard drive, no other operating system. Was working but became progressively harder to boot. Once booted it worked fine. 2 partitions one at 2 GB and one at 150 GB, no idea what they contain. Think Ubuntu set them up when I installed it in April.

I can get it to the GRUB Loading message without the CD. Using the CD doesn't take me beyong that unless I try to use the Spotmau Cd which tries to put in MS W. Even that comes up with error messages and stops.
