Two Questions Re Error Messages and Upgrading Software

Hello,

I recently built the new 2.6.9 kernel on my system, to upgrade my Fedora 1 install which was running the 2.4.22 kernel (I'm still keeping the old one around for a while, just in case). Anyways, the build and install went great, but on my first boot I got an error message about the ARTS (I think it was that) sound server not being able to be contacted. I stupidly clicked on the OK button before writing down the message. I tried looking for it with the dmesg command, and reading the XFree86 log, but I can't find it. Are the any other locations where I could read the message (and hopefully a more detailed version), or should I just reboot and read it again?

Secondly, now that I've upgraded my kernel, I also want to upgrade my other packages. If I want to upgrade to Fedora Core 2 standard, do I need to download the whole FC2 package, or can I just grab the individual RPMs that I'm currently using and install them? I don't want to download the whole FC2 package as I won't use most of it, and I'm on 56K. If I just use apt-get and grab the latest version of KDE, will that do the same thing?

Thanks for any advice regarding my noob questions .

Cheers

OK, I found the error message again when I used the Test Sound button in control panel. It says the the device /dev/dsp can't be opened, sound server will continue using null device. I think I built my new kernel without using the dev file system, using proc instead. Could this be the cause of the problem?

Thanks for any advice.

Cheers

Well, I think I just answered my own questions . I'm recompiling aRTs from scratch, going to see if that makes a difference. I also noticed that I can grab KDE 3.3.1 in seperate source packages, so I'll just skip the ones I don't need. And use yum or apt-get to get non-KDE packages.

Cheers
