trying to install FC3 when FC5 and windows xp is already installed.

Hi,

I was trying to install FC3 without its grub boot loader file.
I alredy had FC5 and Windows XP in my system.
While installing, i didnt touch the FC5 partitions and i didnt install the FC3 grub boot loader file.
But wen i rebooted it, I got a grub prompt.
And now when i try starting my system in rescue mode.. i cant get back my earlier partitions.

There were lots of data and i had installed xen in it as per my requirements.

Is there any way of getting it back ?

how do i install FC3 in my system without using its grub file and using my FC5 grub file ?
I dont want to lose my existing linux partitions and its data...

Is it bcos there are some compatibility issues in linux flavors ?
wat are the things i need to be careful abt wen installing different linux flavors in the same machine ?

Please suggest...
Thank you..

I may be wrong on this, but I think you need to go in with a LiveCD, mount the FC5 partitions, and see about reconfiguing your MBR to look at your FC5 install instead of FC3.

One question I have is, why install FC3 when you already have FC5? Isn't 5 and upgrade from 3?

My help in that is limited. All I can do is try to point you in a direction to get it working. If you've got FC3 to work, maybe you can chroot into your FC5 and fix its version of grub. I don't know for sure, though.

One way or the other, Grub is looking for a menu.lst file and not finding it.

So, if grub now thinks that the FC3 installiation holds the correct file, and it doesn't, you'll end up with a grub terminal. There are ways to go about mounting and booting a kernel from just the grub partition.

Instead, you could, as suggested above, use a livecd and mount your FC5 partition, chroot into it, reinstall grub (and tell it which partiton has the /boot/menu.lst file), then edit it to reflect the new instialliation of FC3.

That should fix ya up like new.
