Exclamation troubles starting GUI in Mandrake 7.2

I recently installed Linux Mandrake 7.2 on a P200MMX, installation eventualy went as planned (in LNX4WIN mode), i booted into linux only to find it stopped at a command line sayin:
<localhost login>
I typed Zak (my user name) and pressed [ENTER]:
<password>|
i typed my password and then it came up with:
<zak@localhost$>
I was puzzled, so went looking for help on the net, about 234 msn chatrooms later, someone said it was configured to start in CLI mode, and gave me an adress to get instructions to make it start in GUI mode, i followed the link and was directed to boot linux, log in, and type "startX".
i followed the instructions and it came up with something saying :
cannot log into X-server
, or something. What server? I'm not on any network!
any help?

hello,
linux uses many servers even though its is on one machine, e.g. there is teh X server, there are sound servers, and i am sure other ones.

anywho - when you type startx it says cannot log into X-server ? what happens what you type plain old X The screen should turn all greyish and look blank, you will need to hit ctrl + alt bkspc to exit it, if it gives errors please post what you can.

have you run xf86config or drakeX to configure X windows yet?

Linux is case sensitive. You may have typed that wrong, to start your "gui" you should try leaving it all lowercase: startx

That was my first distro, a very good one to learn on.

Cool
