Trouble with CD drive on notebook.

Odd problem. I’ve got this older notebook (P-100) with a CD drive, and I want to get rid of the old version of win95 and replace it with some flavor of linux, like say SUSE perhaps. Problem is, even though I’ve set the bios to boot from the CD drive, the computer refuses to do so. Any ideas how I might be able to force it?
