Trouble mounting store bought Game cd's copies work fine

I'm not a big gamer really but recently i decided to install a few of my windows games and was surprised that the original cd's won't mount at all.

bash-2.05b# mount /mnt/cdrom/
mount: block device /dev/cdrom is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: No medium found

It's like that for every game i try to use the original cd to install from.I'm fairly certain it's not an issue with the drive as i am able to install from backup copies i made before i switched over to linux completely. Is there something i'm missing, perhaps something in the kernel?Maybe firmware for the drive?I've tried google and so far no luck.

I'm currently running slackware 9.1 with kernel 2.4.26 and i'm planning to upgrade to slackware 10 and kernel 2.6.10 but before i do i'd like to know if i should save some (more like waste) space for a windoze install. The drive in question is an _NEC CD-RW NR-7800A and due to the unfortunate demise of my DVD drive it's now the sole optical drive in this machine.

If anyone has any insight on what the problem might be related to i'd greatly appreciate any advice that might point me in the right direction.

You mounted the CD using the mount defaults for file system type. Probably the original CDs have a non standard file system format. Play around with nonstandard file formats with the mount command such as norock, nojuliet, udf, and so forth. See man mount.
