transparent desktops

I've seen some screenshots of desktops that have some windows transparent. They look pretty cool and I was wondering how you do that.

I was wondering if it was a special program you downloaded or whether you did that in Linux. So far I've only been able to get the taskbar transparent and it looks good.

Any Ideas

Thanks Charlie

A lot of programs support more or less fake transparency - take a snapshot of the desktop background and blend with the window contents. However, X.org 6.8.0 and later supports real transparency - you can fool around with it using xcompmgr. Almost all terminal emulators support fake transparency now - aterm, Eterm, even Gnome Terminal.
