Went to TBT homepage and didn't come up with a SPECIFIC 'fix". A few other sites accomplished the same results. So, should I go back to TBT homepage and post my "problem" directly? If there is a 'fix" in the TBT site, I must have overlooked it. Once again, I'll post my laptop specs:

[HP2000-210us...12.04 Ubuntu LTS---Tranmission BitTorrent(latest version as far as I know)
Let me say this, in going around asking about various torrent clients, I was lead to believe VUZE is a much better client. Care to weigh in on that? Now that the trend is toward using magnet links, will it render "clients" obsolete?
THANX rtm:
Rick
Regarding VUZE; sorry, my only experience with with Transmission. Formerly I did use some other client, but I've long since forgotten it, and it was many years ago. Either case, they both worked. I do use transmission now and it works fine for me.

I'm not sure if you are referring to Transmission when you use the term TBT.

I'm also not sure how this all has evolved, it seems confusing.

If what you have isn't working, or isn't working correctly, then try removing it from your system using the system's package management software. And then try to install it cleanly using the system's package management software. For instance, say you have Ubuntu, then use their synaptic package manager tool to remove and re-install. I'd also not install more than one bit torrent client at once. Many's the time that I've fallen into disarray because I've installed two or three of the same types of applications and/or services where they try to register their selves with the system in various ways, only to find that there were conflicts or unintentional problems because each application assumed it was the default as well as the only one fulfilling the particular function it was intended for.

Maybe back up and answer this question first: "Did this ever work?" If that answer is Yes, then what was installed and what's changed, or what can you do to get back to that point?

LOL LOL LOL LOL...I just can't win here. NO matter what I post, no matter how I say it, someone ALWAYS gets pissy. Man, all I've gotten is contradiction from one person to the next. I AM NOT CRITICIZING ANYONE!! I AM asking questions that I don't know the answers to. JOHN VV gets pissed/condescending when I question what it is(posted link)and if it will help. Why? I don't know. You (cascade) come along and vehemently denounce using that link/download. OK, I'm GLAD I ask questions..especially when it comes to downloading anything. IF it BOTHERS you, then DON'T REPLY! OK, at the risk of PISSING OFF EVERYONE,(which, at this point, I don't give a damn) let's TRY to accomplish getting the 'listening port(s)" open on my laptop. Below is the readout...ANYONE care to explain and offer SOLUTIONS?

~$ netstat -ntl
Active Internet connections (only servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:51250 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:53 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:631 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:9091 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
tcp6 0 0 :::51250 :::* LISTEN
tcp6 0 0 ::1:631 :::* LISTEN
Am I correct in believing NONE of these are 'open"?

I just viewed a video on youtube concerning opening a port(s) w/ Ubuntu (command line). John VV, contrary to your condescending remark, this person claims opening ports FROM THE COMMAND LINE CAN be done and shows how! So, in response, it has been my understanding/experience that configuring any Linux based program does not require such involved/extended operations. PLEASE, PLEASE EVERYONE... let's KEEP IT SIMPLE!!! NOW, have I got everyone's panties in-a-bind? GEEEZ!! Let's start over!
QUESTION: What must I do in order to "open" listening ports. [HP2000-210us...Ubuntu 12.04LTS...TransmissionBitTorrent]
Cascade...TBT? TransmissionBitTorrent..that's what the hell TBT is. To answer your other question...I MAY have gotten a corrupted O.S.(12.04LTS), however, if I did, I got it straight from the Ubuntu site download!? As you suggest, go straight to the source...I almost ALWAYS do just that!! Oh, one last question to EVERYONE...what else can I possibly do to ensure I get you/everyone completely and utterly screaming mad? LOL LOL LOL LOL EVERYONE....have a good day!!

Afternoon. Did you read my post to cascade and johnVV? Man, this "problem" has just gotten WAY OUT-OF-HAND.
OK, to answer YOUR questions. Yes TBT is transmissionBitTorrent client. #2. I have ONLY TBT. I am aware of how similar programs can conflict w/ one another. # Fair enough...I asked for an opinion...and that's what you provided! The reason I asked about VUZE, I'd read it's praises and wanted comment from those who have/are using it. From a few different sites, I'd read it was 'rated" the best!(?) Would it solve my problems...don't know...I'm still "researching" it. OK, remove/re-install the program...yes...I've used that procedure on other programs, but do you really feel it will solve "opening listening ports"? Anyway, I'll try it. Do YOU have any suggestions/ideas on how to get the 'ports" open? (please read post previous to this).[Information provided in previous post] After reading, is there anything I can do to facilitate your ire? LOL LOL LOL LOL!!! Take Care

Hey ALL:

I'd like everyone to view this link https://forum.transmissionbt.com/vie...php?f=4&t=9184 This is the kind of bullsh-- I'm speaking of. The poor fella asking the same question I have, is lead on a long and fruitless trek by a 'wannabe". This is why I keep posting "KEEP IT SIMPLE"!!! I cannot stress this enough!! Linux IS SUPPOSED to be simple/easy. Let's keep it that way!! I realize TBT isn't Linux, but Linux choose it as one of their "prefered" open-source programs. I will assume for it's simplicity and stability??? I DO NOT have a clue as to why almost EVERY program I have installed on 12.04 has been a "journey through hell"!! I am getting rid of 12.04 very soon. In the meantime, however, I want to "fix" the programs I have trouble with...so I can learn the systems better, so in the future, I may/can solve problems on my own. John VV, cascade and a few others...get over yourselves! If it's such a bother, and when someone asks a question that pisses you off, just leave the site!! See, that's SIMPLE!!!!!!! NO ONE has a gun to your head, you are not getting paid (I don't think) so this is not a case of needing to make a living, you are NOT compelled to be here!! For those of us wanting to learn this system by asking questions, folks like you employing condescending/belittling/snide attitudes kill the very spirit that Linux tries to stand on. If I/we 'question" anything posted here, it is because we DON'T understand...; if someone wanting to learn/understand twists your panties, then get the f#@* out of here! I've had it trying to appease those petty "attitudes". From now on, we ALL should employ some patience. ALRIGHT? OK, I still have the problem with "opening" listening ports. Can anyone help me solve this? And 'LET'S KEEP IT SIMPLE"
THANK YOU:
RICK

Yeah, that doesnt help at all.

If youre going to reference a youtube video you should at least provide the link.

To keep it simple, the port you are trying to use is open in the OS, its not open in your modem/router.

If you have UPP turned on in the rouer, it _may_ be possible to open the ports from command line...if UPNP isnt turned on, nope, you can not do it.

I dont tust UPNP anyway, a few times I've troubleshot computers with similar issues with torrents (and other P2P software) with UPNP turned on, doing a manual port forward on the modem/router has always worked.

I'm not sure why JohnVV posted those links, maybe it was an example of a magnet link (that should work).

I only posted a 'dont not use' because I've seen you get caught with bad P2p/torrent/'pirate' d/ls before.

Ihavent read the whole thread, but really, the beginning makes me think that the thread was started by someone who is a little more advanced than you.

The poster is having problems getting his/her ports forwarded from his/her modem/router. You arent even trying to open the ports on your modem/router, but are trying to get the OS and/or torrent client to 'fix' a non-OS and non-torrent client problem.

Why not just call it transmission rather than trying to create yet another TLA (three-letter acronym).

Yeah, sometimes programs can conflict, but I've never had that issue with torrent clients. I dont recall having that problem with linux software at all, and I've had 6+ audio players, 4+ video players, etc. al installed at once, but maybe I'm forgetting something.

But Vuze will not fix your problems.

No need to get all worked up because you dont want to post information that can help the issue.

Its not like the fake file you got. I can see reasons why you never posted a link to where you got it so that someone else could check if its fake, as that would be at least 'dodgy' under forum rules, but now I'm beginning to think you want your solutions to fit with your preconceived ideas of what the solution should be.

Morning cascade9:

First, I don't possess any 'preconceived notions" of what the solution should be. I'm just trying to get the solution. That said, it has been my experience that "fixes" don't have to be long, drawn out, multiple-step operations. Previously, when I did achieve 'fixes" they were of one or 2 commands and/or just an add-on; tiking something to activate, and presto...problem solved. When you keep referring to " my getting a bad P2P torrent", I'm not sure what your citing, unless your referring to magnets not working/opening? I do wonder if I downloaded a corrupt copy of 12.04, but that was directly from the Ubuntu site and was not a torrent. So yes, you do understand why I'm hesitant to just download "anything"; something JohnVV to offence to?
OK, to hell with this. I'll soon be moving on to another and hopefully, better operating O.S. Trying to get a direct answer, or at least, even some ideas on a "fix" has been an exercise in futility. Seems all I get here is people wanting to 'bitch" at me. Seriously,go back and look at all the posts; show me where someone said "check this" or "look into this" or 'perhaps this is what you need to do"? I only hope by going to another Linux distro, I still don't end up with the same problems I'm experiencing now. Right from the onset, 12.04 has been a plethora of broken programs; programs that have to be configured to use and programs within the O.S. that had to be tweaked that, in my opinion, should have been operational right out-of-the-box. And, of course I get frustrated...wouldn't you? You see, my intro to Linux was 10.04 and I was enthralled with it's performance. I did not have to "fix" anything, and if I did have a problem, I went to either the 'home' Ubuntu help page or the forum and the problem was corrected/eliminated immediately (Well..after doing a minimal amount of reading) Unfortunately, that has NOT been the case w/12.04.
Thanx for all your input.

RICK

I don't always read lengthy posts in full detail, and clearly not if things start going off topic, discussion becomes unfriendly, or I see tons of capital letters and exclamation marks.

My suggestion about the port issue is the same I believe I offered before in post #21; which is to try and run the application as root.

Best of luck, I think that's really all I can offer on the topic, I have no preference, nor experience with other torrent apps.

That 'BRRip XviD' file you were asking about-

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ck-4175498203/

Maybe you got it from a torrent, maybe you're got it from a direct d/l....either way, you're ended up with a dodgy file.

I dont have 'preconceived notions', followed by your preconceived notions.

I just dont see what is so hard about giving feedback.

I dont mind if you think my tone is nasty, there are others around like rtmistler who have given advice also which you dont respond to. A better response to rtmistler would be 'I've tried to run it as root and it fixed the problem' or 'I've tried to run it as root and it didnt fix the problem'. Its not rocket science to run it as root, and if you are having problems doing that you can ask. 'OK, fair enough' doesnt tell us anything...which is part of why you're got a huge mess.

Personally, I think that rtmistler is wrong, and running your torrent client as 'root' will not help you.....the client is running, its connecting, just you have limited seeds/peers and probably awful speeds. Which is typical of 'firewalled' torrents.....while its possible your blocked by an OS firewall, I doubt it, if that was the case you shouldnt connect at all. The firewall is probably in your router/modem (almost all have one). You can get around the router/modem firewall with port forwarding. You dont need to forward the ports for things like web browsing, but for torrents (and most other P2P software) forwarding your ports makes a huge difference. You're get more seesds/peers, and higher speeds.

20 year old content tends to have lower seeds/peers than current content even in the period just after releases. Less people want to d/l a movie or series from the 1990s than people who want to d/ content from 2014.

With all torrents, people d/l content, some people seed it for a while, then remove the torrent. If you go looking at torrents posted over a year ago, the number of seeds/peers is always very low comapred to the 1st week of release, in part because people remove the content/torrent for various reasons. Also there are always lots of 'hit and run' users, people who just d/l than remove the torrent as soon as its reached 100%/seeding.

You can check the number of seeds/peers on many of the tracker sites. If your tracker site says that there is 100 seeds, and you can only connect to 2, you're got issues. If it says there are 2 seeds and you can only connect to 1, there is probably no issues at all.

I've had this issue myself when I run torrents, and I've fixed it for plenty of other people. Not just for torrents, but also for other P2P software.

RICK
Sounds like this has gone way past the original questions. I agree with cascade9's recommendations and statements. I also feel that the age of a torrent is important. It may not be the age of the content; for instance at the anniversary of a historical event, content related to that history may become popular for a few weeks and show this in torrents; however they will likely be new torrents, not very old torrents which end up getting seeded more. The reason for that is the originator of the older torrent may no longer be seeding, and many others may also not be seeding; so it's more likely that a different person originates a new torrent pretty much containing the same content as the original. Cascade's points are that torrents are voluntary, as well as random. It depends on the popularity of that particular content at a given point. You can therefore not force a tracker to give you more peers, and the only way to increase peers and seeds for a particular torrent is for you to have most or all of that torrent's content and to "be" a seeder yourself. Most person's problems there are, they want the torrent content and are never receiving it.

@OP:

What specific problems are you facing, right now?

Another suggestion is to leave it up for a long time and see if it ever gets seeded. There have been very obtuse things I've tried to grab, to find that the torrent doesn't download. I happened to leave the torrent active for a long time like over a month, and it didn't "slowly" get over to my system, at some random point the content became available and next I checked my system, that torrent was complete.

Turning this into a rebuttle format is not solving anything. I'm TRYING to get info on how to 'open" the listening ports so that I can increase 'traffic". I am aware of the seeds/leeches criteria. I'm also aware older torrents can be difficult to obtain. I've serched many torrent sites and have just had to give up on finding certain "files". They are either just not there or they are not exactly what I'm seeking. Yet, even with torrents I do dowload, I get very slow download/upload rates. I believe if I can "open" the listening port(s), this will facilitate a major improvement. All I'm wanting to do. now, is get the proper command to open the port(s). I came across this [sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --(port#) -j ACCEPT]. Could this be what I'm looking for?
Look, I'm not here to start arguments/fights/ill feelings. Should someone gets pissed because I question something they propose, then so be it! I have to 'learn" just as they did and I will ask questions! I'd (or anyone for that matter) be a fool to download just anything someone tells me to. Would you or JohnVV do that?
So, now, could the 'command" listed previously, solve the listening port problem? Yes or No? And Why? I don't believe I'm out of line asking 'WHY".
THANK YOU:
Rick

To JohnVV:

To bad your 'jacked", but that's your problem!! Asking 'why" or "how" is what any of us must do in order to learn.

To ANYONE:

I've come across this: sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --(port#) -j ACCEPT. Is anyone familiar with this command? Has anyone used it and , if so, did it 'open" the listening port(s)? I'm still in search of an 'fix" that would open the listening ports and would like suggestions. Have read quite a few articles concerning the use of bitorrents with the understanding opening these ports would increase traffic. The torrents I've downloaded have been extremely slow in both downloading and uploading. I'm aware of the amount of seeds affecting d/l-u/l. so, my belief is that opening said ports will increase traffic and thereby increase the rates of 'capture". So, what can I do to "open" ports/or increase the traffic response? Also, could anyone direct me to a torrent site that MAY cater to older/less popular "files"? I've been to most of the well known sites and cannot find a few certain titles I wish to have. I realize I'm "looking for a needle-in-a-haystack", and was wondering if anyone knew of/have used such a site?
Thank You:
Rick

Hey:

I sure hope there's someone at this site that knows about transmission bittorrent. For a few weeks now, I've been asking how to "open" listening ports. Been reading a lot of forums. Yet, info I'm reading is confusing and, quite often, contradictory. Well, if that isn't enough of a problem, transbit kept "stalling". Today, I "tested" torrents with very high seed/leech ratios. Couldn't get those to even download, plus, I've had very little success (maybe twice) using "magnets". NOW, all I get is, on 4 diffent torrents , "idle". Nothing downloading!! Took transbit off (removed), will re-install tomorrow, but in meantime, could someone explain this latest failure and help with getting "ports" open. Please, don't tell me the ports are open via default, everytime I've checked "ports" in transbit, it indicated they are "closed".
Thank You:
Rick

http://www.vuze.com/download.php (you may have to click the orange box at the link from my last post to have it detect you need the Linux download(?)) extract Vuze folder run Vuze from in side, then when it's running click "File" from menu then "Open" then "URL, Magnet or Hash..." and paste the magnetic link...

To jamison20000e:

Thank You for replying. Are you indicating I should 'remove" TBT, then install Vuze? If so, then let me state "one fix at-a-time, please"! Let's see if i can get TBT configured correctly...first. If not, then, of course, it's would benefit me to move on to another client. Curious, how familiar are you w/ Vuze? In other words, please extend your opinion of Vuse, both good and bad.
Thank You:
Rick
