Translator Database or Resources wanted

Hi there!
I was asked by someone if I could help him with this little Linux tool he is writing right now. He will create both the tool and the man(ual) in English and wants me to translate it into German and French. I am an experienced translator and but I have done only a few IT projects. I am very new to Linux but it being open source and all I figure most language work most be done by volunteers (like I would be in this project). So there might be databases, dictionaries, communities online. I would appreciate if you pointed me in the right direction.
