Transfering files from Windows to Linux

All,

I have a bunch of .gz files on a windows machine and i want to use rsync to moves them to a directory on a linux machine. Does anyone have info how/if i can do this. SMB and NFS cant be used, but if there is a better way than rsync that is simple, please let me know.

Thanks!

When I transfer stuff FROM windows TO linux, I use WINscp. If you have ssh working on the linux box, WINscp will work fine. The great thing about it is that it can open the remote filesystem like a windows explorer interface which allows drag & drop.

Ive never used winscp, anyone familiar with it know how to incorporate the command into a batch script? Are generating keys involved? Is rsync better?

Thanks

WinSCP is a GUI but does have a command line. Read http://winscp.net/eng/docs/scripting for more details about implementing WinSCP with batch scripts.

Ok, you need it in a script so it will be a little different, in that case, use putty's command line scp 'pscp'. Here is a good explanation of how to use it. You may have to generate keys to get the script to not prompt for a password (Google ssh|scp no password). rsync may be easier if you already have it up and working, but here is an LQ thread discussing rsync vs ssh/scp.

Or install Cygwin on windows, which give you Open SSH/SSHD, bash command line, X-windows, etc. Then use scp to copy both ways, and standard ssh.

Cygwin is free and works well.

This is your best choice, IMO.

OK, for anyones future reference, the best way to do this was ftp. It was already in place, no keys needed to be generated, etc...

So hopefully this helps anyone wanting to do this themselves. I hurt the left side of my brain on this one!
