total security and anon.

hey there, thanks for reading my post.

i have ubuntu linux installed on my dell desktop right now, but i'm not really using it. my modem doesn't work with it, so i have yet to get a new one...but before i commit to linux...well... i was reading an article on filesharing from CNN and read this:

"We're trying to send a strong message that you are not anonymous when you participate in peer-to-peer file-sharing and that the illegal distribution of copyrighted music has consequences," said Mitch Bainwol, RIAA chairman and chief executive officer. "And as this case illustrates, parents need to be aware of what their children are doing on their computers."

The part that I hate about using the internet is "YOU ARE NOT ANONYMOUS". I want to know HOW i can be anonymous. This isn't for file-sharing, this is a freedom of speech issue and I want to know that I can't be traced or tracked or anything of the sort by anyone.

Is this possible with linux? If so, what distro / packages should I install? I'm talking abs. NO tracing! I am on dialup, if that makes a difference.

It is not possible with INTERNET. On top of Internet exist some projects like Freenet or Mute but I don't know the status.

The operating system can not change anything about it.

use a proxy is about as close to being hidden as you can really get on the web, but even that can be traced through if the other person really wants too.
