Tomcat server CPU usage

I'm running a tomcat application server (on linux) and I can't work out how to find its CPU usage. When I call a method it provides and it starts doing stuff, the idle value in top drops to 0, and us goes up to near 100, however none of the values for CPU usage in top or in the output of ps change. I'm sure it's something simple, but it's bugging me - can anyone help?

Oh - it's FC3/4, if that matters (I don't think it does).
