tiny multipurpose vmlinuz + initrd

I saw that you can install slackware from a usb img, which is < 40MB of size... amazing isnt it? the only problem is that it would delete part of the contents of your usb when you make:

Code:

dd if=usbboot.img of=/dev/sdb
as mentioned here

So i came up and extracted the contents of the .img file and using extlinux for my usb I point to the vmlinuz and initrd that where contained in the .img file, and you there you go...

Now, I am fairly new to linux and would like to know how can i add commands to this little kernel?

I would like to add vi, and some selfmade scripts that i could run so I could use this as a tiny problem solver and multi Linux installer.

Please tell me what you think about this. :)

By the way can someone point me to some tutorial on modifying kernels?
I would like to shrink my Slackware 12.2 kernel so it only has the drivers that i use.

(Of course I know slax a fairly tiny linux, and DSL, but i dont need graphical interfaces and they take more than 50MB in my usb which I just want to use for storing some other data to carry around for fixing pcs)
