I just got tightvnc working in order to access my linux machine from windows. I have been successful to a point, but have some questions:
1.) The only way I have been able to connect is to be under the same router, and enter the linux router IP (i.e. 192.168.1.1xx). I cannot connect if my windows machine is on another network, even if I enter the external IP of my home network that the linux machine is on. How can I get around this?
2.) When I remote desktop into linux, I get a plain desktop with a Console on it. I can use the console to open graphical programs, such as thunderbird email, and that works fine. But in general, I dont get the Gnome menus and icons on top or bottom like I do when I am actually using the linux machine. Arent I supposed to be able to use those too? I can post some screen shots tomorrow if you dont know what I mean. I have already edited the xsetup file to include gnome-session &. Without that, I dont get anything graphical.
For question 2 the only answer is startkde, startgnome, startxfce, etc. WHich starts a new X session. It's not all that practical but it's the only solution i found. Maybe someone else knows more on this.
Well, I had no idea, but #s 1 and 2 were related. I dont get full gnome support when under the same router, but once I got to access the desktop from the outside internet, it performed just as it was supposed to, menus and all. Thanks for all the help, I guess this one is all solved.
